On June 26th, it’s believed an unauthorized third party acquired certain data associated with millions of Adidas consumers, exposing sensitive details including contact information, usernames and passwords from their US website.
Following a preliminary investigation Adidas stated that it didn’t believe any credit card or fitness information was included in the breach, with the company saying they immediately began taking steps to determine the scope of the issue. They stated “we are working with leading data security firms and law enforcement authorities to investigate the issue.”
David Ross, VP of research at SecureAuth + Core Security commented on the breach saying:
“Retailers will continue to be prime targets for attackers due to the valuable nature of personal and payment data they hold. Retailers have a responsibility to keep consumers’ personal information safe and implement measures that detect and mitigate these types of attacks.”
According to a global survey from KMPG around 56% of people expressed concerns around how companies handled their personal details. This highlights the importance of having a solution in place to reduce the impact of a data breach by safeguarding customer’s sensitive card details so they never reach the network directly or are stored on internal systems.
