How It Works
1. A customer wants to pay for goods or services provided by the merchant (your organisation).
If they choose to use a debit or credit card, our services will capture and encrypt the cardholder details securely. They are then sent from a payment gateway to a payment processor.
2. The payment processor notifies the bank who issued the debit or credit card, and the transaction is approved or rejected.
The payment processor then communicates this back to the payment gateway, who then informs the merchant and/or the customer.
3. If approved, the necessary funds are deducted from the customer’s bank account and settled into the merchant’s bank account.
If declined or rejected, there may have been an issue with the card, anti-fraud checks have flagged something suspicious, or another reason.

Frequently Asked Questions
Merchant Services ensure you can offer a secure, frictionless experience that allows your customers to make purchases however they’d like, with any major payment card.
To start taking card payments at all, you’ll need these services in place first. This gives your business the stamp of approval and necessary trust to process debit and credit card payments, and start earning valuable revenue.
So, whether you’re looking to get your merchant services set up for the first time, want to streamline your payment providers, or have issues with fraud and declined payments – we can help. We’ve worked with hundreds of organisations to assess their payment journeys, identify obstacles and improve customer experience.
An acquiring payment processor, or acquirer, allows organisations (merchants) to accept card payments in the first place. A number of due diligence checks will take place before this service is approved, to protect customers and reduce fraud.
Once you have an acquirer in place, you will then need a payment gateway service to securely process card transactions in a quick and convenient manner.
Payment gateways provide the encryption channel that transmits highly sensitive card details and transaction information between the merchant, customer, acquirer and other payment processing services. The details could have been provided by the customer in a number of different ways – online, over the phone or face-to-face using a card terminal.
To make things somewhat confusing, it is possible to get acquiring and gateway services from one supplier. Some merchants may also decide to have one acquirer and multiple payment gateway services linking to it – depending on how many payment methods they offer their customers, or how their particular business operations are set up.
